Dr. Angela Cortal
serving those most passionate about understanding their health
~ in Portland & Salem, Oregon ~
who I am
I'm a Naturopathic Physician and a native Oregonian (I grew up in Portland, Salem is my current hometown).
I love helping my patients, whether its reversing chronic pain, demystifying hormone chaos or untangling all the other myriad health conditions I help with on a daily basis.
in a nutshell
I'm a doctor who is passionate about understanding pain and other tricky complex, chronic, or degenerative conditions. I love figuring out how to help each person's body heal.
Sometimes this involves hands-on treatment, other times I use regenerative injection therapies to support the healing and regrowth of areas of pain or injury (muscles, tendons, joints and cartilage are common sites) where past injury, weakness, and chronic inflammation have set in.
With each and every patient, I listen fully and provide support and encouragement along the way because I believe that together we can produce long-lasting change and a better quality of life.
By receiving customized and attentive care, my patients are to choose what treatment approach best works for them. I recognize the unique value and abilities of all my patients and believe that we all deserve the chance to attain the best possible quality of life and maximal life span.

Here's an oldie but goodie of me explaining what I do (c. 2017)

more about me
I love my job. I enjoy what I do because I help others in real, profound ways each and every day.
In addition to my clinical work seeing patients, I also travel the world teaching professional and public audiences as well as instruct other physicians how to be terrific injection therapists. Fellow healthcare colleagues, see this page for more details on my educational programs.
I balance work-life with play-life by enjoying time with friends and family, getting outdoors, seeing new sights, wrangling our two wild and crazy rescue dogs, making sure I get my body moving to help it feel its best, and generally trying to lead a good life full of good company, good food and good coffee.
I am a life-long learner
My self-educational pursuits are currently focusing on learning more for my EDS/POTS/MCAS/etc. patients, identifying and divesting from diet culture (and other systems of oppression), and improving my awareness and capacity for trauma-informed care.
If you're looking for similar self-education, my recent reading list has included (in some semblance of a recommended order):
"You Just Need to Lose Weight": And 19 Other Myths About Fat People by Aubrey Gordon
Burnout and Come As You Are by Emily Nagoski
On Our Best Behavior by Elise Loehnen
The Body Is Not an Apology by Sonya Renee Taylor
The Way of Integrity by Martha Beck
Reclaiming Body Trust by Hilary Kinavey and Dana Sturtevant
The Dance of Anger by Harriet Lerner
This Chair Rocks by Ashton Applewhite
Trauma Stewardship by Laura Van Dernoot Lipsky
Women with Attention Deficit Disorder: Embrace Your Differences and Transform Your Life by Sari Solden
Emotional Alchemy by Tara Bennett-Goleman
Or if you're more of a podcast person, my recent favorites are Maintenance Phase, I Weigh with Jameela Jamil, Where Should We Begin? with Esther Perel, and We Can Do Hard Things.
my background
I graduated with a doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine from the National University of Natural Medicine. I have been in private practice since 2012. I practice in Portland and Salem, Oregon at Reconstructed Wellness Integrative Medicine (and am available via telehealth for any patient in Oregon).
In addition to my private practice, I am a frequently invited speaker for organizations training healthcare professionals in the fields of natural medicine, osteopathic medicine, and regenerative medicine.
I have participated as faculty for numerous injection training courses taught in the US, Canada, and Mexico. I enjoy training healthcare professionals to be top-notch comprehensive providers of regenerative injection therapies for chronic pain conditions.
I am the best-selling author of Younger Joints Today and I'm on the board of Santiam Community Health, a 501(c)(3) non-profit which seeks to help those with medical and financial barriers to accessing traditional healthcare services.
My initial training included learning numerous styles of injection therapies, such as prolotherapy and platelet-rich plasma injections. I received my training from Naturopathic Doctors, Osteopathic Doctors and Medical Doctors from a diverse number of organizations and teaching environments throughout the US, Canada, and Mexico.
I am a member of the American Osteopathic Association of Prolotherapy Regenerative Medicine, and regularly speak at their annual conferences on such topics as using functional medicine to optimize patient response to regenerative injection therapies.
I enjoy teaching, writing and speaking to public and professional audiences on regenerative injection therapies and hormonal dysfunction. I am also actively involved in professional development of my field through the Oregon Association of Naturopathic Physicians (my current position is President, on their board of directors).
I have recently become fascinated with Fascial Counterstrain (because I can just never stop learning!).

I have recently become fascinated with Fascial Counterstrain (because I can just never stop learning!).
From the Fascial Counterstrain info page:
Fascial Counterstrain (FCS) is a therapeutic, hands-on method, designed to release spasm in all tissues of the human body. Every organ, nerve, artery, muscle, ligament, tendon, vein and lymphatic vessel in the human body can actively spasm and produce pain in a natural, protective response to injury. Once this reflex spasm is triggered it can persist, spread & form hundreds of tender points. FCS works to release the tissue in spasm and the corresponding tender point by gently unloading the injured structure.
Gentle body positioning and compression or shortening of the strained structure works to effect a therapeutic release. By positioning the body against the strain or by applying a “counterstrain”, the structure quickly relaxes, thus reducing tension and immediately alleviating this primary source of pain. The elimination of this strain is quickly verified by simply checking the point, which is frequently no longer tender.
It a powerful and profoundly deep tool of listening to the body, then responding with what it needs.
This technique has been developed by Physical Therapists, but nothing is more Naturopathic than working with my patients to facilitate their body's own healing processes.
